Shadab Khan injury update: PCB taking ‘every precaution’ after third concussion in 13 months

Shadab Khan injury update

Shadab Khan has been ruled out of Pakistan’s clash against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata today (October 31) after sustaining a concussion against South Africa. The Pakistan Cricket Board have released an update regarding his fitness.

Pakistan’s vice-captain Shadab suffered a concussion after his head hit the ground while fielding in Pakistan’s previous match against South Africa in Chennai. He had to be taken off the field immediately and Usama Mir was called in as a concussion substitute.

Usama, who took two wickets in the game, has kept his place in the Pakistan XI for today’s clash against Bangladesh while Shadab is still out having not yet recovered from the concussion.

According to PCB’s official update, “the medical panel had no choice but to rule him out of the match against Bangladesh” after an assessment.

Shadab has been prone to concussion related injuries. In fact, this is the third concussion he has suffered since September 2022, having suffered one after colliding with another fielder during a T20 Blast game in England for Surrey earlier this year, and another during the Asia Cup final in the UAE last year, where he collided with Asif Ali.

Keeping this in mind, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said, “Every precaution is being taken, keeping in mind his health and wellbeing. He will continue to be assessed over the coming days.”

Shadab has not had a fruitful World Cup so far, having taken only two wickets from the four games where he has bowled, at an average of 90 and an economy rate of 6.43. He has, however, been decent with the bat, with his contributions often going under the radar. In four innings, he has scored 117 runs at an average of 29.2 and a strike rate of 103.5.
