Watch: ‘Like a scud missile’ – Rohit Sharma smashes full-blooded drive to Temba Bavuma to end whirlwind knock
Watch: Rohit Sharma fell for a quickfire 24-ball 40 against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata today (November 5) as Temba Bavuma took a sharp catch at mid-off.
Winning the toss, India elected to bat first on a hazy afternoon in Kolkata. Staying true to his style all through the World Cup, Rohit came out all guns blazing, attacking the South African bowlers right from the word go.
After playing out the first three balls of the first over of the innings, bowled by Lungi Ngidi, Rohit carved an inside out over cover off the fourth to get India off the mark.
In Ngidi’s next over, he hit the right-arm seamer for two consecutive fours as Shubman Gill helped himself to a flurry of boundaries at the other end as well.
The fourth over by Marco Jansen brought another two fours for Rohit, before he registered his first maximum of the day against Ngidi in the fifth. A leg stump half volley was flicked over fine leg for six, followed by a slog-pull over square leg off a length ball that was nowhere near short enough to be pulled.
By the end of five overs, India had raced off to 61-0 with Rohit batting on 40 off 22 balls. This was the third highest team score after five overs in World Cup history, and the highest ever while batting first.
Kagiso Rabada then came on to bowl the sixth over, replacing Jansen who had been wayward. Having managed just a leg bye off the first four balls, Rohit charged down the track to go over mid-off on the fifth but couldn’t get the elevation and ended up smashing it straight into the hands of Bavuma, who took a sharp reverse-cup catch.
