David, Pollard found guilty of Code of Conduct breach for giving review advice

Tim David, Kieron Pollard

Tim David and Kieron Pollard of the Mumbai Indians have been found guilty of an IPL Code of Conduct breach.

During Mumbai Indians’ match against Punjab Kings at Mullanpur on Thursday (April 18), the TV cameras caught Tim David and batting coach Kieron Pollard gesturing a “T” from the dugout towards Suryakumar Yadav, who was at the crease.

Surya reviewed, and the umpire overturned his original decision and ruled a wide. Mumbai eventually won the match by nine runs.

On April 20, two days after the match in question, the IPL committee issued a statement, announcing that David and Pollard “have been fined for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct.”

Article 2.20 of the IPL Code of Conduct “is intended to cover all types of conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game and which is not specifically and adequately covered by the specific offences set out elsewhere in this Code of Conduct.”

The Article “may (depending upon the seriousness and context of the breach) prohibit, without limitation, the following: (a) the use of an illegal bat or illegal wicket-keeping gloves; and (b) failure to comply with the provisions of clause 6.3 of the IPL Match Playing Conditions.”

However, “the context of the particular situation, and whether it was deliberate, reckless, negligent, avoidable and/or accidental, shall be considered” for the complete assessment.

“Conduct of a minor nature” qualifies as a Level 1 Offence, while “conduct of an extremely serious nature” is Level 4 Offence.

“David and Pollard committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.20 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct,” confirmed the release. “David and Pollard were each fined 20 percent of their respective match fees. Both admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding.”
